Kwa-Zulu Natal Safari

This safari through Kwa-Zulu Natal can either be a stand-alone trip or planned in combination with a Safari through the Kruger National Park.

Day 1 : Johannesburg to Hluhluwe National Game reserve in northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, (KZN).

On the road to Hilltop camp in the Hluhluwe National Game Reserve, keep an eye open for the many animals that become active in the late afternoon. We overnight in comfortable chalets and enjoy dinner in the restaurant situated in the main building.

Day 2 : Hluhluwe National Reserve ( Hilltop Camp)

Coffee and an early morning departure to look for game. Return late morning for brunch while most of the animals rest in the shade. A swimming pool is available for those who would like to cool down. Late afternoon we venture out again on our search for more game, returning late afternoon. Relax while your guide makes a fire and prepares the side dishes for tonights dinner – a “braai” (South African barbecue).

Day 3 : Imfolozi National Game Reserve (Mpila open camp).

We leave after breakfast and travel southwards through Hluhluwe reserve till we enter the adjoining Imfolozi reserve which was the private hunting ground of the Zulu King, Shaka, in the early 1800’s. Enjoy a picnic lunch en-route at a suitable spot and then onwards to Mpila unfenced camp to arrive mid-afternoon and check-in to a chalet or tented camp, depending on your preference.
Optional evening game drive with one of the reserve’s rangers. On your return, a “potjiekos” dinner will be waiting for you.

Day 4 : Imfolozi to Durban via St Lucia

After coffee and rusks, there is the option of joining the game ranger for a very early visit to the nearby Umfolozi river to watch the animals drink – elephants are also often seen there at this time of the day. Time to pack and depart soon afterwards to exit the reserve and head for the town of St Lucia on the KZN coast. Here you can enjoy a brunch before taking a boat trip on the St Lucia estuary. It abounds with hippos, crocodiles and a large variety of birds – the African Fish Eagle and Goliath Crane, amongst others.

The main road takes us southwards to the city of Durban, which has the busiest port in South Africa. Durban sports beautiful beaches and, time permitting, you will be able to enjoy a dip in the warm Indian Ocean.

Many other attractions are to be found – the vibrant Victoria market and Ushaka Marine world. Both places are well worth visiting. Overnight in Durban.

Day 5 : Durban to onward destination

Visit the Victoria market and Ushaka marine world if there was insufficient time on Day 4.
Depart by air or road to your onward destination.
