Sun City and Pilanesberg

“Safaris, Entertainment, Golf and Gaming”

For people with a very tight schedule who would like to experience a safari to see the Big Five, a visit to the Pilanesberg National Park may be the answer. The three choices of accommodation venues that are available at the adjoining Sun City complex should suit most people’s requirements. Just over two hours drive, or just 30 minutes by air from Johannesburg, make it easily and quickly accessible. This magnificent complex was the brainchild of one of South Africa’s top entrepreneurs, transplanting more than a million trees to create the semi-jungle. The majestic Palace of the Lost City presides over this unbelievable spectacle with its sculpted gardens, amphi-theatre and so much more. Besides gaming, the complex has a wide variety of activities – entertainment like jet ski’s, para-sailing, boating, helicopter rides, an inland sea – complete with waves, and more. Swimming pools, restaurants and, of course, a world-class golf course.

Day 1: Johannesburg to Sun City.

On entering the International Arrivals hall at Johannesburg International Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide who will assist you to convert cash or traveler’s cheques at the best rate. Last-minute purchases of film, batteries, sunscreen lotion, etc, can also be done here.

Time permitting, visit the Voortrekker monument near Pretoria, which was inaugurated in 1938 to commemorate the Great Trek of 1838 into the interior. Resume the journey past the platinum mines to Sun City – a dream created out of practically nothing by one of South Africa’s great entrepreneurs.

Join a guided tour of the “Palace of the Lost City” before exploring the rest of this wonderland on your own. Dine in one of the restaurants in an idyllic setting and explore at your leisure.

Day 2: Pilanesberg National Park.

After morning coffee and a sandwich before entering the Pilanesberg National Park adjoining Sun City. We pick up a map at the entrance gate and follow our noses through the park, stopping now and again to exchange news of sightings with other visitors. After 11h00 the animals become more difficult to spot as most are inclined to take a rest in the shade. We could return to Sun City for a bite to eat, returning mid afternoon for further game viewing, or return late afternoon for an optional evening game drive with a park ranger to look for the nocturnal dwellers. With luck, you may even spot a leopard.

Day 3: Sun City to Johannesburg

Time permitting, take another early game drive to return in time to book out and return to Johannesburg for your onward journey. Further time permitting, stop at some of the interesting wayside stalls on our route to the airport.
