We’ll tailor your winelands trip to your tastes and preferences, but we will take the opportunity to highlight some popular stops on past tours.
Winelands – ” Wine and cheese, culture and cognac”
From Cape Town to Paarl, the countryside quickly changes from residential areas to smallholdings, light industry and then to farms with fruit trees and vines. The Simonsberg mountain comes into view, the culmination of the three most well-known wine-producing valleys in South Africa – Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek.
Rustenberg
This exclusive wine estate features a beautiful Cape-Dutch manor house and a lovely
garden, This visit is suitable for groups of up to 6 and requires advance booking.
Glen Carlou
Glen Carlou is located in the scenic Paarl valley and features excellent wine and cheeses. In particular, they are noted for an excellent Pinot Noir.
Seidelberg
Seidelberg Wine Estate in Paarl was originally founded in 1692 under the name “De Leuwen Jagt” – Dutch for “The Lion Hunt”. Renamed Seidelberg in 1997, in addition to a fine selection of wine, this estate features stunning views of Table Mountain, a 4-star guesthouse and a Venetian-style glass-blowing studio.
Tokara
Tokara is a modern winery situated near the summit of the Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschoek. They produce a fine selection of wines as well as a pot still Brandy. This stylish setting features excellent views over Stellenbosch, olive tasting and an innovative restaurant.
Boschendal
One of the Cape’s oldest wineries, Boschendal features an elegant Manor House dating back to 1812, an outstanding example of Cape Dutch architecture. In addition to an good selection of wines, Boschendal also has a restaurant, a café, and the opportunity to have a french-style picnic outdoors under the estate’s fragrant pines.
Fairview
Fairview estate is a must-see on any tour of the Cape wine region. They have a large tasting room to sample their various wines but the highlight is the chance to taste their various cheeses made on the estate. In addition, Fairview’s Goatshed restaurant is an informal Mediterranean-style eatery offering light meals and lunches, so-named for Fairview’s herd of some 600 goats. The Goatshed menu’s main feature is an array of freshly baked breads and bagels to complement the some 25 different cheeses produced at Fairview.
Franschoek
Frasnschoek is the culinary capital of South Africa. Along with many award-winning wine estates, some of South Africa’s top restaurants such as le Quartier Francais and Reubens can be found in this small historic town. The Franschhoek mountain pass just outside town is an excellent photo opportunity with a truly spectacular view of the valley. Another recommended stop is The Huguenot memorial on the edge of town, erected to commemorate the arrival of the main body of French Protestants in 1688. Take time for an exquisite lunch at one of Franschoek’s many fine restaurants and explore the interesting art and craft shops.
Stellenbosch
The larger university town of Stellenbosch is also home to many famous winemakers. Traverse the “Helshoogte” Pass and travel past Stellenbosch to visit a brandy distillery on the outskirts of the town. Join a conducted tour of the brandy-making process, which includes visits to the maturation cellar and also to the cooperage, where expert craftsmen still ply the trade which has been handed down from generation to generation. Finally the opportunity arrives to taste and appraise the very fine brandies.
