Hermanus & Vergelegen Estate Tour - “Walks, Whales and Wine”

Take the main road leading to the popular holiday resorts of Strand and Gordon’s Bay. Travel along the beach road to intercept the spectacular Clarens coastal drive which takes you past the “False cape” to the resort of Betty’s Bay. Take a stroll through the Harold Porter Botanical Garden to the waterfall or relax and enjoy some refreshment in the little coffee shop.
Onwards past the next resort of Kleinmond and skirt the Bot Rivier lake to Hermanus.
Take the scenic Rotary drive on the reserve overlooking Hermanus for a view of the Hemel en Aarde valley to the north and Walker Bay to the south.
Hermanus is regarded the best land-based whale watching place on earth, with Southern Right whales visiting these waters in large numbers between July and November. They come here every year, mainly to calve or mate and return to Antarctica for the summer to feed. The whales together with their calves often swim so close to shore that one can hear their “blow” quite distinctly. If you can tear yourself away from the whale watching, a very wide selection of excellent restaurants near the beachfront caters for all tastes.
Leave early in the afternoon and travel via the Houw Hoek pass and Sir Lowry’s pass to the beautiful Vergelegen Estate near Somerset West. Here you have the opportunity to taste their wines and stroll through the beautiful gardens. Take time to look through the furnished manor house before leaving to arrive back at your guest house or hotel in the late afternoon.
