Route 62 and Montagu Tour

We leave Cape Town early and travel through the Huguenot tunnel past Worcester to the beginning of the Great Karoo. Travel past the beautiful Hex River Valley where the bulk of South Africa’s export grapes are produced, over the Hex River Pass hedged in by the awesome mountain ranges to the turn-off to Montagu near the town of De Doorns. Continue over the Rooihoogte Pass as the countryside constantly changes to the fruit-producing Koo valley. Drive past umpteen orchards and tiny hamlets till we reach our destination.

Not long after arrival, we board a tractor-drawn trailer which takes us up the mountain along a track built by farmer-owner Neil Burger. More than enough photo stops en-route with some optional walking, until we reach the top of the mountain overlooking the Breede River Valley. The town of Robertson is just visible from this angle. On to the hiker’s shack nearby for a treat of dried fruit and Muscadel - this region’s renowned products.

Down the mountain to a picnic area where a mouth watering “potjiekos” lunch, prepared in cast-iron pots over an open fire, is served.

Take an optional walk down to the parking area, where we take our leave to travel via the Burger’s Pass and Keisie valley to Montagu.

Drive past the Spa with it’s hot springs into the lovely little town with it’s beautifully restored Cape-Dutch thatched homes and brilliantly–hued bougainvillea draped over the hedges and decorating the verandah’s.

We drive through the very short tunnel punched through the Langeberg Mountain range to take us into the Breede River valley with the estates around Ashton, Robertson and Worcester producing some of the Capes premier wines. Time permitting, we take the original Du Toit’skloof Pass over the mountains back to Cape Town to arrive in the late afternoon.
