Drakensberg Mountain Tour

This tour works equally well as a standalone visit or as an extension to any of our Big Five Safaris such as a our Kruger National Park Safari.

Day 1 : Durban to uKhahlamba –Drakensberg Park ( a World Heritage Site)

From Durban we follow the original winding road that takes us through the Valley of a Thousand Hills to Pietermaritzburg, following the route of the 92 km Comrades Marathon which attracts runners from all over the world and takes place during the Easter weekend every year. We ensure to arrive at Giant’s Castle by mid-afternoon to book in to our comfortable chalets at the foot of the mighty Drakensberg mountain range.

Day 2 : Giant’s Castle

There are a number of well-marked hiking trails in the vicinity, varying from an hour and a half to a number of hours, to savour the beauty of the Drakensberg range. On some of the longer hikes, one sometimes encounters Eland, the largest antelope in Africa, which can weigh close to 900 kilograms.

There is an easy hike from the camp of just over an hour to nearby Bushman paintings – definitely worth a visit. The restaurant offers packed lunches which come in very handy for the longer hikes. One of the other trails takes one to an easily accessible semi-island in the river running through the reserve.

Day 3 : Giant’s Castle to Underberg

We spend the morning at Giant’s Castle and leave in time to attend an outstanding musical performance by the world-renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir in the town of Winterton, (only possible on Wednesdays during the KZN school terms). After this magical experience, we follow the main road, take a turn-off back to the mountains and overnight in the delightful town of Underberg.

Day 4: Underberg – Sani Pass and Lesotho

Get aboard a 4×4 vehicle at approximately 09h00 for the trip up the Sani Pass and a little way into the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, (passports required). Arguably this is the world’s most spectacular pass with awesome views from the 2874 meter top. Unique birdlife, animals, buttresses, waterfalls – unbelievable! After the formalities at the Lesotho border we stop for a hearty lunch at the Sani Top Chalet. Next a visit to a Lesotho mountain village to meet the friendly inhabitants, after which we reluctantly have to make our way back down the mountainside to arrive back to the Underberg region in the late afternoon.

Day 5: : Underberg to Durban

Depart the Underberg vicinity in time to catch the connecting flight from Durban to Cape Town or Johannesburg
