Montagu Overland Tour – “Potjiekos and Muscadel”
Day 1:
Over the Hottentots Holland mountains via the scenic du Toitskloof pass to the lush Breede River valley stretching eastwards for more than a hundred kilometers – liberally decorated with vineyards and fruit trees.
Continue past the numerous interesting little farm stalls. Stop for wine-tasting at one of the fine wine estates and perhaps buy a bottle of wine to enjoy that evening with dinner
Follow the road through the Langeberg mountains to the beautiful town of Montagu, with it’s lovely old gabled buildings and brightly hued bougainvillea decorating the hedges and verandas.Enjoy an optional lunch or snack before booking in at our accommodation and relaxing in the spa baths, or in the cooler pools in peaceful surroundings. Dinner takes the form of a braai (barbeque), which, depending on the weather, will be served outdoors or indoors.
Day 2:
After a hearty breakfast, take a leisurely drive through the Keisie valley and over Burger’s pass to the farm of Neil Burger. Today’s highlight is a never-to-be-forgotten ride on a tractor-drawn trailer up the mountain overlooking the Breede River valley. A special treat of dried fruit and sweet Muscadel awaits in the mountain hut at the top. After a breathtaking ride back down, a sumptuous traditional “potjiekos”, prepared in cast iron pots over open fires, is served, . The return journey is via the Koo valley, Rooihoogte pass and Hex River Valley with its scores of export grape farms hedged in by the majestic Hex River mountains. Last stop is at an interesting wayside farm stall and back to Cape Town via the impressive 4 kilometer long Huguenot tunnel.
