STELLENBOSCH

Historical StellenboschTour - “Oaks and Gables”

Stellenbosch
Cape Dutch Architecture

We take the road to the Afrikaans Language monument halfway up the Paarl mountain from where you get a wonderful view of the countryside. From there we travel to the country’s oldest town - Stellenbosch. An orientation drive through the town with it’s oak-lined streets will show you the beautiful and varied architecture of this town hosting a world-renowned university.

Fortunately the main core of the old Cape-Dutch buildings have been preserved and most are kept up very well. Later styles, including Victorian and Georgian, make this a beautiful town to explore. Join a walking tour from the information centre via the “Braak’ and many other interesting buildings to the Dutch Reformed Church. Other worthwhile visits are to the Miniature and Toy museum in the old Rhenish Parsonage and the Van Ryn art collection. The pre-supermarket shop, “Oom Samie se Winkel”, is reminiscent of one of the American “wild west” stores, which sold anything from nails to guns.

Stellenbosch is wine country, therefore it is appropriate to do some wine tasting. This will be at an estate with one of the beautiful Cape–Dutch manor houses. Afterwards take a lunch break at one of the many sidewalk café’s or use your time to explore the numerous little shops.

The Village Museum sports a number of furnished period style houses complete with caretakers in the dress of that era.

We depart so as to arrive at your hotel or guest house by late afternoon.
