Tulbagh & The West Coast Tour - “Best of the West”

Bainskloof Pass
Tulbagh

Wind your way past sheep and wheat farms, and then past olive trees and vineyards to the town of Wellington lying in the shadow of the Hawekwa mountains. Well-known more than a hundred years ago for it’s wagon making industry, and later for the high standard of it’s Teachers Training College.

Negotiate the impressive winding Bainskloof pass, built by that master Scots-born road builder - Andrew Geddes Bain, more than 150 years ago. Stop at a picnic spot near the top to admire the cultivated squares decorating the valley below, with the Towns of Paarl and Wellington stretching out in the distance.

Travel through more vineyards and orchards to the town of Tulbagh, set in a fertile valley and bordered on three sides by mountain ranges.

One evening in 1969, a violent earthquake all but destroyed the lovely old buildings lining Church street. The town was rebuilt and once again one can admire the unique Cape-Dutch houses with their thatched roofs.

Explore the wonderfully furnished Drostdy on the outskirts of town and enjoy a glass of wine in the old cellar. Also visit the beautiful old Dutch Reformed Church with it’s flagstone floor and thatched roof and the other similarly built museum houses.

Taste the local wines at the Paddagang restaurant before enjoying an optional lunch on the shaded verandah. Early afternoon we depart through the Nuwekloof pass via Gouda and Hermon to the Langebaan resort. Take a stroll on the lovely white sandy beach along the lagoon or relax with a refreshment on the verandah of a lagoon-side restaurant. Depart in time to arrive back at your hotel or guest house in the late afternoon.
