West Coast Wild Flower Tour (August/September) - “Flowers unlimited”

From August to beginning September every year, the West Coast of South Africa is transformed into an unbelievable kaleidoscope of colour as far as the eye can see - it’s Spring flower time!

The tour starts early to get the best out of the day and to beat the rush. Stop at Bloubergstrand for a quick photo of Table Mountain and resume our course to the West Coast National Park. After a short visit to the “Geelbek” complex, carry on to Postberg. This section is a private reserve, which the owners allow the general public to visit every year during August and September.

We select our route through the park with care to ensure that the sun is at our backs. In this way the flowers are always facing us for the best photo shots. Besides the brilliantly-hued flowers, we also encounter a number of Bontebok, Eland and Wildebeest(Gnu). With luck we may even catch a glimpse of the shy nocturnal steenbok or the harmless bat-eared fox.

Don’t be surprised if you spot a Southern Right whale near the coast. They visit these waters every year between July and November. Of late, some of these mammals no longer journey back to Antarctica, but remain to feed in the cold plankton-rich waters.

We select a suitable spot to enjoy our picnic lunch, and depart early afternoon to visit the Tienie Versveld Nature Reserve near the town of Darling. As we travel back to Cape Town, the flowers sense the cooling air and start to close for the night. Arrive back in Cape Town late afternoon.

Note: If it is obvious that it will be too cool or wet for the flowers to open that day, the tour could be cancelled or postponed to avoid disappointment. For this reason, bookings cannot be taken far in advance
